You've spent years perfecting your SEO strategy to rank on Google and other search engines. But what happens when people start skipping the search engine and asking an AI chatbot for an answer instead?

That's where a new discipline comes in: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). In this article, we'll explain exactly what GEO is, why it isn't a replacement for traditional SEO, and what the key differences and similarities are between the two.

what is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It encompasses all the strategies and techniques you can use to improve your company or organization's visibility in Large Language Model (LLM) tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot.

You might also see it referred to as "Answer Engine Optimization" (AEO) or "Large Language Model Optimization" (LLMO), but the concept remains the same: optimizing your digital presence for AI-driven tools.

will AI replace traditional SEO?

Absolutely not! There are several reasons why SEO remains crucial:

User numbers: Google still has far more users than AI tools. Even with further growth in AI tool usage, people will continue to use search engines.
AI engines use search engines: Many AI tools use search engines to enrich their answers with up-to-date information through a process called RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation).
Overlapping tactics: Many GEO and SEO strategies overlap, so efforts in one area also benefit the other.

similarities between SEO & GEO

1. visibility

SEO and GEO share a common goal: improving your brand or organization's visibility. Although this happens across different platforms, the approach has some similarities.

2. technical optimization

Factors like loading speed, mobile responsiveness, and overall user-friendliness are important for both traditional search engines and AI tools.

3. data-driven decision-making

Data-driven decision-making is equally important for both disciplines. In SEO, we analyze rankings, click-through rates, and other metrics to refine our strategies. In GEO, we're still at the beginning of this development, but data analysis will also play a crucial role in content optimization.

4. understanding search intent

Understanding your audience's needs is the foundation of any successful digital strategy. In both SEO and GEO, you start with keyword research, or better yet, semantic research. You don't just research which words people use, but why they use them—what is their search intent? Whether a user types a short search term into Google or asks a full question to an AI assistant, it's your job to understand that intent and respond with relevant content.

5. content authority

EEAT (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) is a concept that has been important within Google's guidelines for years, but it's arguably even more crucial for AI tools. Content that exudes authority and trustworthiness has a higher chance of being used as a source by AI systems.

6. quality content

High-quality, relevant content is vital in both SEO and GEO. For both, your texts must be well-structured and easy to read. Content that provides value to the human reader is generally also more highly valued by algorithms and AI systems.

differences between SEO & GEO

1. goal

Despite the similarities, there are also clear differences between SEO and GEO. With SEO, the goal is to rank higher in search engines and drive more traffic to your website. With GEO, the ultimate goal is to be mentioned and cited as a source in an AI-generated answer.

2. optimization

The optimization itself also differs. SEO traditionally revolves around using keywords, building backlinks, and providing an excellent page experience. GEO, on the other hand, focuses more on content clarity (how clear is the information?), structured data (data that the AI can easily understand), and the credibility of the source.

3. metrics

The way you measure success also differs significantly. With SEO, you track your success with metrics like rankings, click-through rates, and the number of backlinks. With GEO, it's much more difficult, and you primarily look at brand mentions, citations, and your share of voice compared to competitors.

4. search behavior

With the rise of AI tools, search behavior is also shifting. Users are increasingly asking their questions in full, natural sentences, a phenomenon we call conversational search. With a traditional search engine, the user scans the results and clicks on a link. But with an AI tool, the user relies on the AI's answer itself. Chances are they won't click through to your website at all. That's why you should focus on visibility within the text of the answer, rather than on generating website traffic.
